Mobilenotifier - another attempt at fixing iOS notifications

"One of these isn´t very good..."

After a search for iOS5 related stuff on twitter, i came across @peterhajas project mobilenotifier. Like GriP, Notified and Lockinfo, it aims at fixing iOS main problem right now, the awfull notification system. At peter´s website, we have access to an youtube video and a presentation in pdf where he details his project. I found the image above specially significative, but the whole presentation explains even better what´s wrong with iOS notifications.

There seems to be a beta available, but still not in deb format. However, there´s a beta repo coming, so it will be easy to install. Here´s a screenshot.




Very similar to GriP, and Notifiedapp´s notifiedGriP plugin. He also talks about a notification pane, so it´s much like notified´s and lockinfo´s.

What can i say, more is better, there´s not perfect solution right now, and this has the advantage of being open source. However, i hope all this solutions get better quickly, because i have a feeling they don´t have much more time to be relevant - i have a feeling iOS 5 will be all about notifications.

p.s: lockinfo 3.0 is also looking wicked

Statusbar Notifications for @notifiedapp

The team from @notifiedapp has just released the second notification extension for Notified. The first, if you missed it, was called Notification Bar, and looks very close to GriP's normal notifications, but fixed at the bottom (see above, first GriP´s normal notifications, then Notified´s notification bar).

Not bad, but still an intrusive solution. I was hoping for something akin Double Height Statusbar for GriP

Has you can see, however, it's not double height, but normal statusbar, very close to what is done in rss Reeder app.


I'd prefer the double height bar, but this is still sweet. Proper notifications for iPhone, Yay!

What is still missing from Notified, IMO:

1. Double Height Statusbar extension (still think is the best solution, and the Notified team has got the code of GriP´s from @gauravk92 )
2. All notification extensions should work on landscape
3. Choosing extensions from inside Notified settings, and being able to choose what extension is used for each application
4. Being able to block notifications (via statusbar or bar) in lockscreen
5. Being able to make notifications appear for just a few seconds
6. Stacking of notifications
7. Make notification pane appear gradually like with Qtwitter, or Android´s (really following your finger)
8. Group notifications by application, if you want (now is by time)
9. Email notifications (coming on 1.4)
10. Notifications for appstore updates, iPod music playing, calls, etc
11. Release extension SDK for external developers
12. The "!" statusbar icon should be folowed by number of unread notifications
13. Whenever iOS flags a notifications has "read", they should be automaticaly removed from Notified´s log

Forget inotifyex, Notified is coming!

Sad because inotifyex project is apparently going nowhere? There is good news now, the eyedevs team is coming soon with an alternative attempt to bring android style notifications to the iPhone, called Notified. Can´t wait!

isbsgriplog 0.0.1-5 released

Getting better and better, the sbsettings toggle that let´s you access GriP´s log almost in Android style now alows direct launch of push notifications apps by pressing the message on the log.

Join isbsgriplog with Lockinfo push notifications support, and the Double Height Statusbar theme for GriP, and we are really close to Android notifications. Untill inotifyex is out, that is.

Use mQuickdo to acess GriP message log!

What would be better than using SBSettings to access GriP´s message log? Yep, to use one of the available mQuickdo gestures, android notification pane style.

That is precisely what Trinitus now acomplished. Granted, right now it needs some manual work, but Trinitus promised an easier installation method, soon.

GriP SBSettings toggle - new version

People are having some problems accessing the source i mentioned in my last post, to get GriP message log SBSettings toggle.

Here´s a deb file that you can install by executing "dpkg -i filename.deb" on terminal. This is a new improved version created by Trinitus - it does not need the video toggle hack.

iNotifyEx - GriP replacement coming! Notification system for iPhone!

Just two days after i lamented the lack of development on GriP (Growl for iPhone), KennyTM made a quick edit to his project page, that refers to iNotifyEx, the new project that will replace GriP and make our dreams of a proper global notification system for iphone to come true.

Here are some details:

As a redesign, iNotifyEx shall have characteristics of following APIs:
* Growl-like notifications
* Android-like notifications
* Some GriP-specific addition
* Some iNotifyEx-specific addition

One step closer to a proper notification system for iPhone OS

With the advent of push notification apps, it become pretty obvious that the iPhone OS notification system SUCKS. Comparing it with the way Android and WebOS elegantly handle notifications, make the iPhone look poor. I mean, obtrusive popups in the middle of the screen? Sounds? Badges?

That´s why GriP (Growl for iPhone) is easily one of my three must have jailbreak apps (the others being SBSettings and Backgrounder/Kirikae). Even on it´s current beta state, its so much better than the normal system.

It gives users much more control over the way information from SMS, email and push notifications is displayed, in a non-obtrusive way. When receiving push notifications, you are able to see all of the messages sent to you, and not just the last one.

The more recent Double Height Statusbar theme, seen above (made by the author of the SMS GriP extension, GauraVK92) , added another type of notification alert, that is similar to what can be seen on the latest versions of the iPhone Facebook app.

However, GriP also introduced a resource that if implemented correctly would bring it closer to the awesome Android notification pane, the Message Log. Problem is, this log is normally buried in Settings.app, something that made its usage a nightmare.

Well, despite the 2 month hiatus seen on project development (c´mon KennyTM, speak to the fans!), the community came to the rescue, namely tom.blum85, that figured a way to creat a SBSettings toggle to quickly access GriP´s message log!
I can tell you, after some days of usage, this is AWESOME. At any given moment, i can now have a clear image of all the SMS, Emails and various Push Notifications apps outputs received in a period. All without missing a single message, without having to flick through pages of apps to find badges, and without having to open every single app to find out what´s new.

Like i said, it´s unfortunate that a project with such huge potential has been apparently suspended by it´s developer. Surely people would give the necessary support, finantial or otherwise, if he asked for it. Also, the delay in releasing GriP officially on Cydia is a shame, because so many people are unaware of such a great jailbreak application. So i ask you, please RT and share this information. Spread the word :)
